Local transit groups to study toll lanes
The Federal Highway Administration has awarded an $800,000 grant to two local transportation agencies to study the benefits and costs of a Bus Toll Lane Network in the Tampa region.
Such a network would create dedicated lanes for buses that other vehicles could pay tolls to use.
The Tampa Hillsborough County Expressway Authority, in partnership with Hillsborough Area Regional Transit, will study the idea.
The idea is that bus and private traffic is kept moving without congestion in the bus rapid transit corridors through a price-management system.
Toll costs for non-transit users increase or decrease based on the nontransit demand. That prevents congestion in the lanes intended to move buses more quickly along public roads.
The study will identify corridors where the toll-lane network could be used and provide estimates of the economic benefits of the program.
HART plans to use bus rapid transit vehicles along city streets in Tampa beginning in 2013.
