Transit Plan OK expected tonight
December 9, 2009
Hillsborough County's 2035 transportation plan is expected to be adopted this evening after a public hearing.
For the first time, the plan balances road and transit improvements, compared with the current plan that uses 85 percent of the budget on roads.
The Hillsborough County Metropolitan Planning Organization is expected to approve the document at the hearing, which begins at 6 p.m. at the County Center, 601 E. Kennedy Blvd., said agency executive director Ray Chiaramonte.
"The major change is there is a much larger priority on transit," Chiaramonte said. 'It represents a major change in the way we think about the future of our community and provides more efficient energy use."
The Metropolitan Planning Organization began working on the long-range plan update in 2006. It recognizes the gap between the cost of improvements, which could total more than $21 billion, and the probability of funding.
